Letter from Our President, Aida Zukowski
It is amazing how quickly the past few months have gone by. Two wonderful receptions, a great program at the botanical garden and very interesting trips to Chatham County and historic Durham. In addition, we have been participating in lunches, book clubs, antique presentations and so many more activities. Through it all, we have connected with many new members and enjoyed the contact with those who we have known for a long time.
There is much in store as you will see in this newsletter. Please join us for the Valentine Fun and Fundraising event to celebrate our scholarship fund and attend the new trips “in our backyard” this spring. In March at our tea and membership meeting, enjoy the musical talent of member Lilian Pruett. Join us at our elegant Spring Luncheon as we end our year together at the Carolina Club being entertained by our speaker, Freddie Kiger.
March Program – Thursday, March 15
Our March program takes place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 15 in the Carolina Meadows Auditorium. Coffee, sweets, fellowship and a brief meeting will be followed by talented UWC member Lilian Pruett’s musical delicacies on the piano. There is no charge for this event.
Spring Luncheon – Tuesday, April 10
Local historian Freddie Kiger will talk about some of Chapel Hill’s more notable characters. As we approach our 70th birthday, relics of our club’s history, held in Davis Library’s collection, will be available for viewing at the luncheon. The event will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, April 10 at the Carolina Club on the UNC campus. The cost for the luncheon is $35; there is also a charge for parking in the Rams Head Parking Deck. Car-pooling is encouraged.
Special Spring Events
- Hunt Museum, Gregg Museum of Art and Design on NC State’s Centennial Campus – Our first spring day trip, on Wednesday, February 28, will take us to NC State’s centennial campus for a tour of the remarkable Hunt Library. The $115 million facility opened in January 2013 and is best known for its architecture and technological integration, including a large robotic book storage and retrieval system which houses most of the university’s engineering, textiles and hard sciences collections. A short distance away, we will lunch at the Club House of the University’s Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
After lunch, we will drive to the main campus for a tour of the Gregg Museum of Art and Design, now housed in the former residence of the chancellor. The Museum’s collection of more than 35,000 objects includes major holdings in textiles and clothing, ceramics, folk and Native American art, photography, design and decorative arts, and the largest collection of outsider art in North Carolina.
We will car-pool from a convenient Chapel Hill location, departing around 10:00 a.m. on February 28, to arrive at the Library for our 11:00 a.m. tour. An email with full details will be sent to all club members. Contact Anne Montgomery: GAMontgomery@bellsouth.net, or 919-929-3801.
- Duke Lemur Center – Join Carol Ziemiecki on a tour of Duke’s famous Lemur Center on Wednesday, March 28 beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Duke Lemur Center is the world’s largest and most diverse collection of lemurs – Earth’s most threatened group of mammals – outside of Madagascar. Take a peek at lemur.Duke.edu and check out the infants born at the center in 2017. Afterward, we will have lunch at City Kitchen in Chapel Hill. Contact Carol Ziemiecki: caz0414@bellsouth.net, or 919-967-9117.
- UNC Campus Tour and Visit to the Ackland – Join us on Friday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m. for a walking tour through the quads as we introduce the University’s rich history, True Blue traditions, landmarks and legends, hallmarks and points of pride. The tour lasts about an hour and strives to acquaint (or reacquaint) us with the culture and charm of Carolina. The UNC Visitors’ Center wants to share the many extraordinary stories of this wonderful university in our own backyard and introduce us to the innovation, impact and accessibility that define Carolina’s identity.
