This year will mark the 70th anniversary of the University Woman’s Club!

In spring 1949, the fledgling club kicked off its membership drive, and that fall held the first meeting.

Did you know that:

  • The University Woman’s Club was an outgrowth of the Newcomers’ Club, which restricted membership to three years.
  • Dues were $1 from 1949 until 1957, and by 1973 had climbed to $3.50. So, factoring in inflation, the current $35 dues are a bargain!
  • The UWC first hosted the Sir Walter Cabinet in 1961.
  • It wasn’t until the 1990s that female UNC staff members were permitted to join the club; until then, the focus was female faculty members and spouses.
  • The UWC established a scholarship fund to help deserving young women attend UNC in 2001. Currently, we fund two scholarships each year, now named in honor of Ida Friday.

These tidbits of information – and many more – are described in the history of the University Women’s Club, written by our historian, Linda Haac. You’ll find the history here.

Throughout the year, more information honoring our rich history will be featured in this space, so be sure to visit the website frequently.
